History

  • NEBOLSHOY THEATRE - Ulyanovsk Youth Theatre  
  • Founded by Department of Culture and the Arts of Ulyanovsk Region (at present – Ministry of Arts and Cultural Policy of Ulyanovsk Region)
  • Founded in 2001
  • Seating capacity - 180 seats
  • Equipment: sound distribution in 5.1 format; lighting equipment with a range of 16 million colours; a video projector, which helps to create fabulous stage backdrops  
  • Address: Ulyanovsk, Pushkinskaya Str., h. 1/11. 

 

The Start

  • On November 13, 2001 a Youth Theatre was founded in Ulyanovsk. It had no premises, no main venue or other facilities, no transport
  • On August 31, 2004 the Theatre’s company meeting was first held in the new building at Pushkinskaya Str., h. 1/11
  • On September 1, 2004 the first rehearsals of new productions were held on the new stage
  • In September, 2004 Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia, was appointed Director-in-chief  of NEBOLSHOY THEATRE
  • The first play staged in NEBOLSHOY THEATRE was “One Hundred Fantasies” – a play based on poems and songs by famous children’s poets and songwriters. This “remedy for boredom in 35 acts for children aged from 6 to 83” was created by director Eduard Terekhov and the actors.

  • December 23, 2004: the opening night of “Genie’s New Year Adventures” , directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia
  • December 27, 2004: the opening night of «Leopold the Cat’s Birthday», directed by Sergey Kondratenko.
  • February18, 2005: the opening night of “Brother Rabbit’s Tricks”, directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia.
  • May 3, 2005: the opening night of “Simple Things”, directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia.

 

There was no opening ceremony that year, but the theatre gave 140 performances.

 

Season of 2005-2006

  • The opening night dedicated to the opening ceremony of NEBOLSHOY THEATRE – “Snegurushka”, based on a play by Mikhail Bartenev, directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia.
  • The “Feedback” programme finalizes the contest, announced a year earlier, and invites new participants to visit NEBOLSHOY THEATRE’S web page.

 

 Season of 2007-2008

  • April 11, 2008  – the opening night of “Crime, Home Help, Punishment, Pensioner Murdered” – a play by the Swedish playwright Mattias Andersen (directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia).
  • February – May 2008 – NEBOLSHOY THEATRE holds the patriotic contest “TIMES CONNECT – GENERATIONS CONNECT”, with the support of the Department of Culture and Archiving of Ulyanovsk Region and the Ministry of Education of Ulyanovsk Region.
  • The creative staff of NEBOLSHOY THEATRE: production director Marina Korneva, actors – Nikolay Avdeyev, Aremiy Kurchatov, Elena Dvorianskova, Elena Miakushina, Olga Kashkarova, Alexanr Naugolnov, Alexandra Bishevskaya, Tatyana Zvereva, Aleksey Rodkin.
  • In January 2008 Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia, is appointed Director of the Youth Theatre.
  • June 2008 – the opening night of “CHEKHOV. With Love…” (directed by Marina Korneva). This was the first Russian classical drama experience for NEBOLSHOY THEATRE.

 

Season of 2008-2009

  • In September 2008 NEBOLSHOY THEATRE’s production “Crime, Home Help, Punishment, Pensioner Murdered” (directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia ) participates in VIII All-Russia Art Festival for Children and Youth “Zolotaya Repka” (Golden Turnip), held in Samara.
  • October 14 – October 22, 2008 – NEBOLSHOY THEATRE takes part in V All-Russia Festival of Performances for Children and Young People “Na Poroge Yunosti” (On the Threshold of Youth), held in Ryazan. The production “Crime, Home Help, Punishment, Pensioner Murdered” (directed by Eduard Terekhov) is awarded a diploma “For Highlighting Present-Day Youth Issues”. The production “CHEKHOV. With Love…”  (directed by Marina Korneva) not only is awarded a diploma “For Preserving the Best Traditions of Russian Vaudeville”, but also becomes on the two festival productions to be awarded a special prize from the festival’s partner – Prio-Vneshtorgbank.
  • At the same festival the theatre company meets the company of State Drama Theatre n.a. K. Khetagurov from the Republic of South Ossetia (Tskhinval City) and its art director, the Minister for Culture of South Ossetia, Tamerlan Dzudtsov.  New contacts are established, friendships formed. The two theatres discuss and plan their further creative cooperation.
  • November 26, 2008 – the opening night of “A Very Chinese Tale” (directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia ). The Plastics Director Andrey Droznin (Moscow) took an active part in the production
  • December 22, 2008 – opening night of “The Singing Piglet” (directed by Marina Korneva).
  • At the end of December 2008 the Youth Theatre’s New Year performance was named “The Best City New Year Show” by the television and radio broadcasting company Reporter in its chart of Ulyanovsk’s New Year events of 2008-2009.
  • February 9 - February 16, 2009  - Days of South Ossetia are held in Ulyanovsk Region. This event stemmed from NEBOLSHOY THEATRE meeting the company of State Drama Theatre n.a. K. Khetagurov from the Republic of South Ossetia (Tskhinval City). The guests from Ossetia present “Julius Caesar” (play by William Shakespeare, directed by Tamerlan Dzudtsov, Honoured Artist of the Republic of South Ossetia).
  • February – May 2009 – NEBOLSHOY THEATRE holds the patriotic contest “TIMES CONNECT – GENERATIONS CONNECT”, with the support of the Department of Culture and Archiving of Ulyanovsk Region. The contest is also supported by Governor – Head of Ulyanovsk Region Government S.I. Morozov.  All the municipalities of Ulyanovsk Region took part in the contest. The closing event, featuring announcing the winners, took place on May 9, 2009.
  • The production "CHEKHOV. With love" is awarded the Diploma “The Brightest Impression of the Festival” at the Third Festival of Ulyanovsk Region Theatres “Litsedey-2009”.
  • May 5, 2009  – the opening night of “The Impostures of Scapin” (play by Jean Baptiste Moliere, directed by Marina Korneva).

 

Season of 2009-2010

  • October 2, 2009 – the 8th theatre season is opened by a premiere performance of the play “WELL, I’M LIVING. ALL IS WELL” based on stories by V.M. Shukshin (directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia).
  • December 21, 2009 – the opening night of “Knock-knock! Who’s There?” (director-producer Marina Korneva).
  • As part of the joint project with Ulyanovsk Regional Museum of Local Lore n.a. I.A. Goncharov, on February 9, 2010 NEBOLSHOY THEATRE holds an opening performance for the production “The Knight of the Sky”, a biographical play on I.S. Polbin, twice Hero of the Soviet Union.
  • On March 27, 2010 the Youth Theatre NEBOLSHOY THEATRE was awarded the main prize of The Fourth Festival of Ulyanovsk Region Theatres “Litsedey-2010”. The prize was established by Governor -  Head of Ulyanovsk Region Government S.I. Morozov. The production “Well, I’m Living. All is Well” (based on stories by V.M. Shukshin, directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia) was awarded the festival diploma in the “Best Director” nomination. The “Best Actor” award went to NEBOLSHOY THEATRE’S actor Artemiy Kurchatov, the “Best Actress” award – to Elena Miakushina. 
  • April 20 – April 26, 2010 – the play “The Singing Piglet”, directed by Marina Korneva, is in the top ten of Russia’s best productions for children and participates in The Seventh National Festival of Theatre Art for Children “Harlequin-2010” in Saint Petersburg.
  • May 7, 2010 – NEBOLSHOY THEATRE finalizes the Third Regional Contest “TIMES CONNECT – GENERATIONS CONNECT”, dedicated to the 65th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War.  
  • June 4, 2010– the theatre closes the 8th theatre season with a performance of “Well, I’m Living. All is Well” (directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia).

 

Season of 2010-2011

  • October 9, 2010 – NEBOLSHOY THEATRE is awarded the Grand Prix of X Festival of Fashion and Theatre Costume “Alexander Vasilyev’s Volga Seasons”. At the Festival, the theatre presented a collection of costumes for “The Impostures of Scapin” (directed by Marina Korneva).
  • October15, 2010 – NEBOLSHOY THEATRE opens the 9th theatre season with the opening night of “Once Upon a Time There Lived Hercules” (director-producer Marina Korneva).)
  • December 21, 2010 – the opening night of the production “Through the Green Hills of the Ocean” (director-producer Marina Korneva).
  • May 23 – May 25, 2011 – participation in the First Regional Festival “Theatrical Volga”, held in Penza City. The theatre presented the production “Well, I’m Living. All is Well” (directed by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia).
  • June 5 – the theatre closes the 9th theatre season with a performance of “Once Upon a Time There Lived Hercules” (director-producer Marina Korneva).

 

THE TENTH (JUBILEE) SEASON OF 2011-2012

  • September 1 – the 10th  theatre season is opened with the festive programme “Day of Knowledge with NEBOLSHOY THEATRE”.
  • October 8 – the opening night of “A WEEK FULL OF SATURDAYS” (production and stage design by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia).
  • November12, 2011 – Jubilee performance dedicated to NEBOLSHOY THEATRE’S 10th anniversary. Jubilee premiere – “THE ANTHROPOIDS” (stage version and production by Marina Korneva).  
  • December 22, 2011 – the opening night for the production of “HOW LOPSHO BECAME A MAN” (part of the project “Tales of Great Russia”, director-producer Marina Korneva).
  • March 24, 2012  - the opening night of “DON’T PART WITH THOSE YOU LOVE” (play by A. Volodin, director-producer - Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia)
  • June 1, 2012 – the theatre closes the 10th theatre season with a performance of “HOW LOPSHO BECAME A MAN” (director-producer Marina Korneva).

 

THE ELEVENTH SEASON, 2012-2013

  • September 1, 2012 – the new theatre season is opened with a performance of “How Lopsho Became a Man”.
  • September 11- September17, 2012  - the theatre participates in The Fifth International Festival of Theatre Art “THEATRE. CHEKHOV. YALTA” with the play “THE ANTHROPOIDS”. Awards: the Festival GRAND PRIX, “The Crystal Fronton”, in the nomination “Original Director’s Vision and Outstanding Acting Ensemble”. The Festival’s Special Prize “Best Director” is awarded to Marina Korneva.
  • October 20, 2012  - the opening night of the play “The Comedy of Errors” (directed by Marina Korneva).
  • October 24 – October 26, 2012  - the theatre takes part in All-Russia Festival of Theatre Art for Children “Tales of the Olonkho Land” in Yakutsk City. NEBOLSHOY THEATRE presented the play “How Lopsho Became a Man”. Awards: diplomas in the nominations “Best Director” (to director Marina Korneva), “Best Actor” (to Artemiy Kurchatov) and “Audience Choice Award”.
  • December 22, 2012  - the opening night of the play “Puss in Boots” (production and stage design by Eduard Terekhov, Honoured Artist of Russia).
